Campion run riot with emphatic away-day masterclass

Handsworth FC 1-7 Campion AFC

Campion AFC produced a scintillating all-round performance on the road as they swept aside high-flying Handsworth with a stunning 7–1 victory, extending their remarkable run of form in emphatic fashion.

The hosts started brightly and Campion may have ridden their luck in the opening few minutes when Matty Nebard appeared to handle inside the penalty area. Strong appeals followed, but the officials waved play on, much to the frustration of Handsworth.

That moment proved pivotal, as Campion soon took control. Ben Grech Brooksbank continued his excellent goalscoring form by opening the scoring, reacting quickest to a dangerous Ewan Gregson set piece and finishing clinically.

Captain Aidan Day doubled the advantage on 28 minutes, rising highest to power home a header following a goalmouth scramble, before Patrick Sykes made it three with a superb half-volley from close range after finding space unmarked inside the area.

Campion showed no signs of easing up after the interval and struck almost immediately. Ewan Gregson cut inside from the right wing and unleashed a superb left-footed strike that curled beyond the goalkeeper and into the top right-hand corner.

Handsworth briefly pulled one back when former Campion man Ify Ofeugbu scrambled the ball home, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly confirmed as false.

Gregson grabbed his second of the afternoon on 70 minutes, making a clever run into the box before seeing his left-footed effort parried into the net by the Handsworth goalkeeper. Patrick Sykes then added his second of the game on 76 minutes with another composed right-footed finish inside the area.

Sykes came agonisingly close to completing his hat-trick moments later when substitute Jack Normanton broke free down the left flank and picked out the unmarked forward. With the match ball seemingly destined for home, Sykes scuffed his effort wide, to the frustration of players and management alike—though it wasn’t long before everyone saw the funny side.

Skipper Aidan Day rounded off a memorable afternoon on 88 minutes, glancing home a fine header from Ewan Gregson’s corner to cap a truly dominant display.

Campion would like to thank Handsworth for their excellent hospitality on what was a bitterly cold winter afternoon.

The victory marks Campion’s sixth successive win in all competitions, and attention now turns to Wednesday night’s clash with Golcar United at the Anytime Couriers Stadium, as the momentum continues to build.
