History was made across the Humber Bridge on Tuesday evening as Campion AFC marked their 400th official semi-professional fixture with a vital 1-2 victory over Barton Town at the Easy Buy Stadium.
Ironically, it was at this very ground that Campion played their first ever semi-professional fixture at the start of the 2016/17 campaign, defeating Westella & Willerby 2-5. Nearly a decade on, with the play-off race intensifying, the stakes were significantly higher — and once again, Campion rose to the occasion.
Barton made a bright start, forcing an early corner inside the opening minute, but it was the visitors who struck first — and in style.
On just three minutes, Shay Muirhead produced a moment of magic down the left flank, leaving his marker for dead before squaring across goal. Sonny Whittingham arrived perfectly to fire emphatically into the roof of the net, registering his third goal for the club and silencing the home crowd.
The contest soon turned feisty. Midfielder Joe Mitchell won possession in a strong challenge on Lewis Stephens, sparking uproar from the hosts’ players and bench. After the dust settled, Mitchell was shown a yellow card amid the heated protests.
Barton attempted an immediate response and came within inches of levelling, breaking dangerously down the left before seeing their effort crash against Luke Wilson’s crossbar.
Campion, however, carried a constant threat on the counter. Just before the interval, Muirhead was involved again — delivering a simply outstanding pass to release Ewan Gregson down the right. Gregson drove into the penalty area with purpose and finished expertly to give Campion a 0-2 lead heading into the break.
The second half saw Barton raise the tempo as they searched for a route back into the contest. Campion were forced to dig deep, showing resilience and organisation under sustained pressure. At the other end, opportunities to extend the lead fell to Paddy Sykes, Gregson and Muirhead, but none could apply the finishing touch.
The hosts found hope on 75 minutes when Lewis Stephens pulled one back to set up a tense finale.
With five minutes remaining, Barton threw caution to the wind — pushing five players forward, including both central defenders. The gamble created space for Campion on the break, and substitute Kai Phillip nearly sealed it in stoppage time, only to see his effort sensationally cleared off the line.
Despite late pressure, Campion defended superbly to see out the victory and secure a crucial three points. The result opens up a five-point gap over Barton in the play-off race — though the hosts do hold a game in hand.
Attention now turns to a huge local derby at the Anytime Couriers Stadium, where Campion host Thackley on Saturday 28th February (3:00pm kick-off), aiming to make it nine consecutive victories.
