Four-star Campion march on as clean-sheet run continues

Campion continued their superb run of form with a commanding 4–0 away victory over Frickley Athletic, recording a third consecutive clean sheet and a tenth shut-out in all competitions this season in a performance full of quality, resilience and attacking flair.

The visitors got off to the perfect start and needed just seven minutes to break the deadlock. Captain Aidan Day showed excellent composure to bring the ball down before driving forward and picking out Ewan Gregson on the right. Gregson cut inside on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a sensational curling strike that left Frickley goalkeeper William Sykes with no chance.

Frickley responded positively and enjoyed a spell of pressure, particularly from set pieces. Campion were forced to dig deep defensively, with Ben Bodle producing a crucial goal-line clearance midway through the first half. Moments later, Luke Wilson came to the fore with a superb one-on-one save to deny Frickley player-manager Martyn Woolford, preserving Campion’s slender advantage. Frustration grew among the Frickley players, management and supporters as they headed into the interval still trailing.

The hosts emerged strongly after the break and went close to an equaliser when Ifeanyi Nnenanua struck a thunderous effort that looked destined for the net, only for Wilson to pull off another outstanding save to keep Campion ahead.

That moment proved pivotal. Campion weathered the storm and, on 78 minutes, doubled their lead. The impressive Sonny Whittingham drove forward from midfield and combined brilliantly with Paddy Sykes and Gregson before delivering a pinpoint ball to Day, who rose highest to head home for his seventh goal of the season.

With Frickley’s heads dropping, Campion sensed blood. Substitute Jack Normanton went close moments later, firing just wide from inside the penalty area, but redemption came swiftly. On 84 minutes, Normanton found space once more and this time rifled an unstoppable strike into the top corner to make it 3–0.

Campion weren’t finished there. Another substitute, Shay Muirhead, capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Frickley’s defender and goalkeeper, calmly tapping into an empty net to cap off a ruthless and polished away performance.

The victory sees Campion move to within one point of the play-off positions, with momentum firmly on their side heading into the final three months of the season.

A special mention must go to Sonny Whittingham, who delivered an outstanding display in midfield alongside Day and Joe Mitchell, seamlessly stepping in for the injured Ben Grech Brooksbank.

Next up for Campion is a return to the Anytime Couriers Stadium for the first time in 2026, as they welcome Knaresborough Town on Friday 30th January (7:45pm kick-off).
