MATCH REPORT | Knaresborough Town 3-1 Campion AFC

Sheridann Dickerson8 Mar - 15:44

Campion’s winning streak comes to an end after tough night at Knaresborough.

Campion AFC’s impressive nine-match winning run came to an end on Friday evening as they fell to a 3–1 defeat against Knaresborough Town at The Hummel Stadium in the Northern Counties Eastern Football League Premier Division.

The Camps travelled to North Yorkshire in excellent form but were without leading goalscorer Paddy Sykes, and from the outset it proved to be a difficult evening against a determined and physical Knaresborough side who frustrated the visitors throughout.

Campion started with attacking trio Shay Muirhead, Jack Normanton and Ewan Gregson, but service into the forwards was limited as Knaresborough disrupted the Camps’ usual attacking rhythm. The hosts looked particularly dangerous from set pieces and their aerial presence caused problems for the Campion defence during the opening stages.

The visitors’ first notable opportunity arrived when Jack Normanton found space outside the area and unleashed a strike from distance, but the effort failed to seriously test Knaresborough goalkeeper Ed Hall.

Campion came closest to breaking the deadlock later in the first half with a well-worked move. Sonny Whittingham delivered a superb ball in behind the defence to Aidan Day bursting down the left flank. Day cut the ball back into the penalty area for Shay Muirhead, who arrived unmarked with a late run, but he was unable to keep his effort down and fired over the bar.

The second half began with renewed energy from the hosts and their pressure eventually told on the hour mark. Following a Knaresborough corner, a scramble inside the six-yard box saw Ben Gelder react quickest to poke the ball home and give the hosts the lead.

Campion manager Lee Ashforth responded immediately, introducing Kai Phillip and Ben Grech-Brooksbank in place of Muirhead and Normanton in an attempt to inject fresh impetus into the attack.

However, controversy soon followed. After the referee awarded a drop ball to Knaresborough midway inside their own half, play resumed and Grech-Brooksbank appeared to dispossess the defender before racing through one-on-one with Ed Hall and calmly finishing into the bottom corner. Campion looked to have equalised, but following consultation with the assistant referee, the goal was disallowed — a decision that left the visitors frustrated. Perhaps it was the correct call, but had the referee blown his whistle earlier to halt play, the confusion may have been avoided altogether.

Knaresborough capitalised on the reprieve and doubled their advantage in the 79th minute. Another dangerous delivery from a corner found Slater Barkham-Barnes, who lashed the ball into the roof of Luke Wilson’s net to put the hosts firmly in control.

Ashforth rolled the dice once more, sacrificing defender Matty Nebard for attacker Chinedu Osadebe. The change quickly paid dividends as Osadebe gave Campion a lifeline. Breaking free down the left flank, he showed composure to finish expertly and reduce the deficit.

With renewed belief, Campion threw everything forward in search of a late equaliser, but Knaresborough defended resolutely and held firm under sustained pressure from the visitors.

Any hopes of a comeback were finally extinguished late on when substitute Aaron White produced a moment of brilliance, unleashing a stunning strike from 25 yards that flew past Luke Wilson and into the net to seal the victory for the hosts.

The full-time whistle sparked jubilant celebrations from the home side, who move up to tenth place in the NCEL Premier Division after ending Campion’s nine-game winning streak with a hard-fought performance.

Campion will now look to respond quickly when they host Tadcaster Albion A.F.C. on Friday 13th March in another crucial Northern Counties Eastern Football League Premier Division clash, with both sides firmly in the hunt for a play-off place.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:45pm at the Anytime Couriers Stadium.
