Campion bow out at the Semi-Final stage...

Campion AFC’s journey in the JCP Construction NCEL League Cup came to an end at the semi-final stage following a 3–0 defeat to Premier Division champions Liversedge at the Clayborn Ground.

The visitors started the game on the front foot and looked the more dangerous side in the early exchanges. Campion created a number of opportunities from set pieces, with Aidan Day seeing a powerful header cleared off the line, before Ben Grech Brooksbank forced an excellent save from the Liversedge goalkeeper with a well-struck effort.

Campion continued to apply pressure and were arguably the better side for large spells of the first half. However, they were made to pay five minutes before the break. A turnover in possession saw Corey Billy dispossessed by Alfie Dean, who showed composure to round goalkeeper Luke Wilson and slot into an empty net to give the hosts the lead.

The goal proved a setback for Campion, who looked momentarily deflated heading into half-time.

Despite this, Campion emerged for the second half with renewed intent and once again started brightly. But just as they looked to build momentum, Liversedge struck a decisive second. Finn Donovan was played through down the right-hand side and produced a superb chipped finish over Luke Wilson to double the advantage and put the hosts firmly in control.

To their credit, Campion continued to push forward and played some impressive football in search of a way back into the game. Paddy Sykes came close, only to be denied by another fine save from the Liversedge goalkeeper.

As the game entered stoppage time, Liversedge added a third to seal the result. Alfie Dean’s curling effort from the edge of the area took a deflection, wrong-footing Luke Wilson and finding the back of the net.

While the 3–0 scoreline may appear comfortable, it arguably flattered a clinical and ruthless Liversedge side, with Campion left to rue missed opportunities at key moments.

The defeat brings an end to Campion AFC’s rollercoaster 2025/26 campaign and their hopes of lifting the NCEL League Cup.

Everyone at Campion AFC would like to congratulate Liversedge on their victory and wish them the very best in next month’s final at Scunthorpe United.

We would also like to place on record our sincere thanks to all supporters, players, staff, and volunteers for their incredible backing throughout the season. We look forward to seeing you all again at the start of the 2026/27 campaign.
