Campion produced a spirited second-half comeback to earn a well-deserved point in a thrilling 2–2 draw with promotion hopefuls Sheffield FC, in what was the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
The visitors started brightly and played some excellent football throughout the first half, looking well-organised and composed on the ball. Despite their resilience, Campion found themselves behind just before the interval when Ryan Cook headed home from close range following a Sheffield set piece, leaving goalkeeper Wilson with no chance.
Defensively, Campion were strong, with debutant Corey Billy impressing on his first appearance for the club and the recently married Jamie Allsop once again showing his consistency at the back.
After the restart, Campion grew into the game and created several opportunities through Shay Muirhead, Ewan Gregson, and Paddy Sykes, but against the run of play, Sheffield were awarded a penalty after Lewis Waddington was adjudged to have fouled his man in the area — the tenth penalty Campion have conceded this season. Bradley Beatson stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to double the hosts’ lead.
Despite the setback, Campion refused to give in and continued to push forward with great determination. Their persistence paid off five minutes from time when Ewan Gregson curled a stunning 25-yard free kick into the top corner to give his side a lifeline.
Moments later, substitute Jahro Parchment went close to equalising after breaking through one-on-one, but his effort was brilliantly saved by the Sheffield goalkeeper. However, deep into stoppage time, Parchment was brought down inside the box, handing Campion a dramatic late penalty.
Gregson stepped up once again, but his spot kick was superbly saved by Ryan Eades. The ball, however, rebounded out wide, and Gregson reacted first to whip it back into the danger area, where Paddy Sykes was waiting to smash home the equaliser and send the Campion bench wild.
It was a fitting end to an entertaining encounter and a performance full of fight, belief, and character from the Bradford side, who will take plenty of positives from the display.
Campion would like to thank everyone at Sheffield FC for their fantastic hospitality on a cold Tuesday evening and wish them the very best for the remainder of the season.
