Campion AFC rounded off 2025 in style with a hard-fought 1–0 victory away at Eccleshill United, securing three valuable points in challenging conditions at the Keighley Cougars Stadium.
The first half was a tight and competitive affair, with both sides battling the elements and looking to gain a foothold in the contest. Eccleshill came close to breaking the deadlock through Gabriel Wadsworth and Lewis Waddington, both of whom tested the Campion defence with promising opportunities. Campion responded with chances of their own, as skipper Aidan Day and Paddy Sykes went close, but the hosts’ backline stood firm to ensure the sides went in level at the break.
The second half continued in the same vein, with neither side willing to give an inch. Eccleshill pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, while Campion remained patient and disciplined, waiting for their moment to strike.
That decisive moment arrived with just eight minutes remaining. Ewan Gregson collected the ball on the wide left and delivered a superb, inch-perfect cross into the box, where Paddy Sykes rose highest to power a header past the Eccleshill goalkeeper and give Campion the lead.
The hosts threw everything forward in the closing stages, but Campion showed great resilience and organisation to repel a late onslaught and see out the victory. The clean sheet marked Campion’s fifth in their last eight games and their first win in three fixtures, providing a fitting end to the calendar year.
Attention now turns to the start of 2026, with Campion returning to home soil to face Wombwell Town on Saturday 3rd January in the first game of the new year.
