Match Preview

Sheridann Dickerson11 Feb - 16:35

Campion AFC return to the Anytime Couriers Stadium on Saturday afternoon as they welcome local rivals Thackley AFC in what promises to be a fiercely competitive NCEL Premier Division encounter.

The Red & Blacks come into the fixture in outstanding form, having won their previous five matches in all competitions. Momentum is building at exactly the right time for Campion, who have firmly placed themselves in the conversation for a late push towards the play-off places. Confidence is high within the camp, and the squad will be eager to extend their impressive run in front of a home crowd.

Visitors Thackley arrive with a slightly different recent record, having won just one of their last five outings. However, that sole victory speaks volumes — a superb 1-0 home win over runaway league leaders Liversedge, who had previously tasted defeat only once in the league. That result alone underlines the threat Thackley carry and serves as a reminder that they are more than capable of producing big performances.

Campion will certainly not need reminding of the challenge that awaits. The reverse fixture at Dennyfield earlier this season saw Thackley run out emphatic 4-1 winners in front of a crowd of 373. Goals from Paul Walker, Luke Brooks and a brace from Toby Marriott sealed a difficult afternoon for the Red & Blacks, with former Thackley man Ben Grech Brooksbank grabbing Campion’s consolation.

That result will no doubt still be fresh in the memory, adding extra incentive for a response on home soil.

Saturday’s fixture could also see several familiar faces lining up against their former club. Luke Wilson, Harry Parsons, Ben Bodle, Joe Mitchell, Jack Normanton and Ben Grech Brooksbank have all previously represented Thackley. Grech Brooksbank remains an injury doubt heading into the weekend but could potentially feature from the bench.

With local pride, play-off ambitions, and recent history all adding spice to the occasion, supporters can expect a full-blooded and competitive contest under the Valentine’s Day spotlight.
