Match Preview

Sheridann Dickerson17 Feb - 15:36

Campion AFC return to action on Wednesday evening as they host Wombwell Town in the NCEL Premier Division, looking to extend an impressive winning run despite recent disruption to the fixture schedule.

Following two postponements, the Red & Blacks still come into the clash having won their previous five matches in all competitions. Momentum remains firmly on Campion’s side, and with a fully fit squad to choose from, Lee Ashforth will be eager to see his side pick up where they left off.

Visitors Wombwell Town arrive fighting for their survival at the foot of the NCEL Premier Division table. Currently twelve points from safety, they have collected just two points from their last five league fixtures and will be desperate to claw their way back into contention. Sides in that position often prove dangerous opponents, and Campion are fully aware that nothing can be taken for granted.

The reverse fixture at The Recreation Ground earlier this season serves as a clear warning. Wombwell emerged 2-0 winners on the day thanks to goals from Ollie Fearon and Jordan Kershaw, handing Campion a difficult afternoon.

However, the Red & Blacks returned to The Recreation Ground just a month later in the JCP Construction NCEL League Cup in Memory of James Hitchcock, where a stunning first-half strike from Ewan Gregson proved decisive in a hard-fought victory.

That recent history sets up an intriguing encounter under the lights at the Anytime Couriers Stadium. Campion will be boosted by the return of Ben Grech Brooksbank from injury, adding further options in attack as they look to maintain their strong run of form.

With promotion ambitions on one side and survival hopes on the other, Tuesday evening’s contest promises to be competitive and intense from the first whistle.
