Campion vs Westella

A WONDER strike from Jacob Buchanan wasn’t enough to help Campion claim all three points as Westella held them to a 1-1 draw on a cold afternoon in West Yorkshire, in the NCEL Division One.
Buchanan helped the hosts draw first blood just before the half-time whistle, taking the ball on the full volley before it nestled in the top left corner.
Mike Hewitt equalised late into the second half, smashing home from six yards out to ensure the visitors were able to take a point from their travels.
Westella had gone close to levelling it up half way through the second half as Zak Oakshott latched onto a cross to head the ball onto the crossbar.
Prior to Buchanan’s opener, Eli Hey went close to breaking the deadlock, getting onto a defence-splitting pass from Dan Stocker, forcing Westella’s Liam Taylor into full stretch to keep the game scoreless.
Campion held pressure on the Lincolnshire-based side throughout the match but a collection of Taylor saves and defensive blocks denied the all-important second goal.
Victory for the hosts would have left them four points off Hallam who sit two spots above them in the last play-off spot.
At the other end of the table, a much-needed draw for Westella allowed them to move a point away from safety as they chase Worsborough, who weren’t in action.
Campion came out on top in the reverse fixture with a 5-2 triumph in the opening game of the season and the victors first game in the NCEL.
The match went ahead after an early pitch inspection on Saturday morning.
Next up for the Bradford will be Ollerton Town away, as Westella welcome Yorkshire Amateur to The Euronics Stadium.
